THEOplayer now supports AV1 on Chrome

Written by THEOplayer | August 13, 2018

THEOplayer now supports AV1 on Chrome 69 Beta. The latest version of Google’s browser was released on August 2 with AV1 decode. Although the support is still in early form, AV1 video playback is now possible thanks to AV1 V1.0 being firmed up.

Hooray

Your Browser Supports AV1

Good news and bad news

Your browser could support AV1 if you enable it. Please head to chrome://flags/#enable-av1-decoder if you are a Chrome (Canary) user, or head to about:config if you are a Firefox Nightly user.

:-(

Your browser does not support AV1. The matrix below lists browsers which support AV1 if enabled.

Next to Firefox Nightly (where AV1 playback is supported by THEOplayer as well), Chrome is the second browser to support the new royalty-free video coding format. When out of beta this means THEOplayer will support AV1 on 75% of desktop browsers. Let’s see which browsers will follow.
